Artifacts & Treasures

Mjölnir, Gungnir, Gleipnir — the dwarf-forged treasures that arm and doom the gods.

Mjölnir

Thor's hammer

The hammer of Thor, forged by the dwarves Brokkr and Sindri: it never misses, always returns to the thrower's hand, and was the most-worn amulet of the Viking Age.

Gungnir

Odin's spear

The spear of Odin, forged by the sons of Ivaldi: it never stops in its thrust, and oaths sworn on its point are unbreakable.

Draupnir

Odin's gold ring

Odin's arm-ring, forged by Brokkr and Sindri: every ninth night it drips eight new rings of equal weight — wealth that multiplies itself.

Gleipnir

The binding of Fenrir

The dwarven ribbon, smooth as silk and stronger than any chain, forged from six impossible things to bind the wolf Fenrir until Ragnarök.

Brísingamen

Freyja's necklace

The shining necklace of Freyja, forged by four dwarves — the most famous treasure of the goddesses, once stolen by Loki and recovered by Heimdallr.

Skíðblaðnir

Freyr's ship

The best of ships: big enough for all the gods with weapons and war-gear, always finding fair wind, and folding up like cloth to fit in a pouch.

Gjallarhorn

Heimdallr's horn

The 'Resounding Horn' of Heimdallr, kept beneath Yggdrasil — its single great blast, heard in every world, is the signal that Ragnarök has begun.

Naglfar

The ship of dead men's nails

The largest ship in the cosmos, built from the untrimmed fingernails of the dead — it sails against the gods at Ragnarök, and trimming corpses' nails delays its launch.

Hringhorni

Baldr's funeral ship

'Ring-prowed', the greatest of all ships — Baldr's vessel, which became his pyre, launched by a giantess when all the gods together could not move it.

Megingjörð

Thor's belt of strength

The girdle that doubles Thor's divine strength when he buckles it on — one third of the thunder-god's standard kit with the hammer and iron gloves.

Járngreipr

Thor's iron gloves

The iron gauntlets Thor must wear to grip Mjölnir's shaft — and with which he once caught a glowing iron bolt out of the air and threw it back through a giant.

Andvaranaut

The cursed ring of the Völsungs

The gold-breeding ring Loki stripped from the dwarf Andvari, cursed to destroy every owner — engine of the whole Völsung tragedy, and ancestor of Tolkien's One Ring.

GramGramr

The sword of Sigurðr

The sword Odin drove into a tree for one man to draw, shattered against the god's own spear, and reforged for Sigurðr — who split the anvil testing it and killed the dragon with it.

TyrfingTyrfingr

The cursed sword that cannot be sheathed unbloodied

The golden-hilted sword two dwarves forged under duress and cursed: it never rusts, never misses — and must kill a man every time it is drawn, three great evils before its end.

The Falcon CloakValshamr

Freyja's feather-skin of flight

Freyja's falcon-feather cloak, which turns its wearer into a falcon — the gods' only aircraft, forever being borrowed by Loki for emergencies he caused.

MistletoeMistilteinn

The weapon that killed Baldr

The one thing in creation too young to swear the oath — cut by Loki, thrown by a blind hand, and the death of the shining god. The kissing plant has a body count.
